Obituary for William Gayle Chipman

William Gayle Chipman III, age 66, died Monday evening, October 7, 2019, in Greenville, Mississippi, after a recent stroke. Born June 10, 1953, to William Gayle Chipman Jr (Bill) and Mary Gibbs Chipman (Meg) in Greenville, he leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Cindy; daughter, Elisabeth; granddaughter, Claire; and sister Sarah Ellen.

Will, or "Chip", as he was known to family and old friends, spent his early years reading, listening to the Beatles, visiting the family farm in Attala County, and enjoying summers at Camp Tallaha. He was an Eagle Scout who went on to graduate from Delta State University in 1975 with Bachelor of Science in Education. His colorful life led him through several professions, including a DJ at WBAQ, gatekeeper at the Greenville cemetery, and Libertarian candidate for the United States House of Representatives. However, no job held as much meaning for him as the twenty years he spent teaching 8th-grade American History in Lake Village, Arkansas, where he shared his love of history, love of learning and zeal for freedom and patriotism with his students. His hometown of Greenville and his home state of Mississippi held important places in his heart throughout his life, as did his true enjoyment of literature, writing, music, classic movies, and the history of his family.

Will was deeply passionate, a loveable contrarian, a moral philosopher, a scholar, a husband, a father, and a brother, whose presence left an impression on everyone he met and whose absence leaves a void no one can fill.
“Do not got gentle into that good night / Old age should burn and rave at close of day / Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
