Obituary for Fredrick Alton Champion

Fredrick Alton Champion, Jr. passed quietly at home in Swiftown, Mississippi on June 6, 2020 with family and his sitters present. He was 83 years old.

He was born in Canton, Mississippi to Fred and Hazel Champion.

Fred served in the National Guard as an artillery command specialist and was decorated as a rifle marksman. He was honorably discharged in 1959.

He was a farmer who worked with father and also farmed later with his sons. He loved all of his family. He was proud of his boys, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Belzoni, for more than 70 years. He was a good husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Yvonne Hunter Champion, two sons, Fred III (Eva) and Todd (Laurie), one sister, Paulette Pinson (Ricky), five granddaughters, Crystal Downing (Chase), Caitlyn Thompson (Nathan), Callie Hughes (Cory), Mary Kendal Alias (Taz), Bonnie, eight great grandchildren, Molly, Mason, Levi, Miller, Knox, Myles, Hazel, Laura Ellis and one on the way, and two nephews, Mickey Pinson (Kathy) and Scotty Pinson.

Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at Greencrest Gardens at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital, 2500 N State Street, Jackson, Mississippi 39216..
