Betty Joyce McGregor Avis, most well known as “Granny”, peacefully awoke in heaven on May 23, 2019 after living, as she would say, “a blessed and wonderful life” for the past 60 years at her home in Wayside, MS. She was 87 years old. Betty, the Matriarch of our family, was our religious counselor, mentor and safe harbor. She loved and served her family and friends well.

Betty owned and operated Avis Catering for almost 50 years, getting her start as a young child working in a bakery to make money for her family during World War II. She is well known by generations of families in the Delta as the “wedding lady” and a wonderful cook. She was prepared at any moment for a lunch time crowd of anywhere between two and twenty people. She also worked at Riverside School as a secretary for over 30 years and retired in 1997.

Betty was born to the late Margaret Gilbow McGregor and Alvie “Speck” McGregor on March 1, 1932 in Blytheville, AR. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Everett “Bill” Avis and her beloved daughter, Sarah Pamela Avis Steele (Gibb).

Betty is survived by her son James Alvie “Jim” Avis of Greenville, MS; her daughters Debbie Avis Veach (Ray) of Maumelle, AR and Carol Avis Oakes (John) also of Greenville. 10 grandchildren: JJ Avis Smith (Jamey) Greenville, Ms; Gibson Steele (Elisabeth) Greenville, MS; Mandy Avis Nogradi (Chris); Jamie Avis (Allison) Greenville, MS; Steven Veach, Las Vegas NV; Michael Veach, Jonesboro, AR; Caroline Oakes Strazi (Brian) Greenville, MS; Kyle Oakes (Elizabeth) Greenville, MS; Reid Veach (Eryn), Little Rock, AR and 14 great grandchildren.

Betty is also survived by All of her siblings: Her two sisters and very best friends, JoAnn McGregor Pippin (Estlon-deceased), of Alpharetta, GA and Patricia McGregor Skelton (Max), of Fayetteville, GA, known far and wide along with Betty as “The Birds”. Oh, the many trips and adventures they have had!! She also leaves behind a beloved brother, Ronald A McGregor (Ann) of Aurora, Co. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, and very close friends that she loved dearly.

Special thanks to South Sunflower Medical Center of Indianola, MS, and her doctors and nurses there; her angels-in-waiting sitters: Shirley Davis, Linda Terry, Enreika Boldien and LaConya Smith; her devoted Physical Therapist and friend, Sissy Gardner; and to Grace Hospice, especially Ashton Campbell. We will forever indebted for your special gifts and love.

There will be a visitation held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 412 Main Street, Greenville, MS on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. with a Catholic Mass to follow at 10:30 a.m. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, Memorials be made to:
