Obituary for Betsy H. Neill




Betsy Neill passed away on June 13, 2019, at DRMC in Greenville after a sudden illness at their home in Brownspur,Mississippi, thre­e months before her Annual 39th Birthday. That was also ten days after she and her husband, Robert Hitt Neill,cel­ebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary.
Betsy was mother to three children of their own: Adam (Cynthia) Neill of Louisburg, NC; Betsy Claire (“BC”) Neill-Irwin of Leland, wife of John Patrick Irwin and mother of their two sons, GrandBoys Sean Robert Irwin and Neill Leiton Irwin. A second daughter, Janice Christine Sweeney lives in Florida. Betsy was “Other Mother” to several more youngsters, including Tommy Burford, Bryon McIntire, Mark & Mike Ethridge, Joe Bernardi, Tommy Borgognoni, Coo Collins, ClifLusk, Robert Brunstetter, Sherry Wills, Monica Louwerens, Denise Wadlington, Bart Barrett, Scott Hutcheson, John Carroll, Eric Fowler, Matt “Napalm” Morgan, and many others. One of Other Mother’s Biblical Gifts was the Gift of Hospitality.
A notable Bible Scholar, Betsy taught Sunday School andDiscipleship classes in several churches where her husband served as Youth Minister or Music Minister over the years. She was also active in the Emmaus Walk Ministry, and the world’s largest prison ministry, Kairos International, in which she served as Rector of Women’s Kairos #12, and Kairos Outside #2. She served on the Mississippi Kairos State Board as well.
She also enjoyed her husband-bestowed Title of World’s Best Cook, and owned The Coffee Shop lunch restaurant in Leland, which became a real Ministry for her. She catered large and small events for years, including many in Prison! Betsy had a Green Thumb, raising many of the vegetables and fruits she cooked, served, canned, jellied, and preserved to share with others. She loved beauty, and was a certified Flower Show Judge, attending those events throughout the South.
Betsy Harper graduated from Lexington High School and went to Ole Miss as a Rebelette, while Bob played Rebel Football. She was Top Six Beauty at a time when there were two Miss America’s on campus! Betsy also served as Mississippi’s Miss Hospitality 1st Alternate. She and Bob met on September 30,1962: it was Love at First Sight. They were married June 3, 1964 and were blessed with 55 years of matrimony.
The Neills wish to thank the Caregivers in the DRMC Emergency Room Trauma Uni­t and the Intensive Care Unit, especially Mrs. Angie Parkinso­n-Piasecki, Trey Densford, Florence Blue-Stewart, LeAnne Davis and Vince Knight.
A Memorial service will be held Saturday June 22, 2019 at the Leland United Methodist Church at 202 North Broad Street, Leland MS 38756. Visitation will be at 12:00 followed by a celebration of Life at 1:00.
